A “Brand” New Facebook

Posted on March 5, 2012

This past week Facebook has launched its new pages for brands.  These brand pages are intended to mimic the “timeline” aspect of use profiles.  These new pages will allow for a great way for brands to get their history and messages across to consumers utilizing a chronological and image focused way.

These new brand timeline pages include several new features developed solely for brands.

Cover Photo

One of the most visible changes, aside from the timeline layout, is the incorporation of the cover photo.  Facebook has stated that cover images must not contain:

  • Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”.
  • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section.
  • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features.
  • Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”.

Default Landing Pages

The landing pages for all brands will be their timeline.  According to the Facebook Help Centre,

“For Pages with timelines, people will always see the timeline view of your Page when they visit it. Views and apps are now easy to find right below your Page’s cover. You can’t change the default landing view to another view or app, but you can link people directly to a particular view or app on your Page. Find the URL for a view or app on your Page in the web address bar of your browser when you visit that view or app.”

Viewing Brand Pages

When going to a brand page for the first time users will have the option to filter how the content is displayed.  These options include:

  • Highlights.
  • Friend activity.
  • Post by page.
  • Posts by others.

The default viewing session for the page also prominently displays interactions that your friends have had with that brand which is a great way for a brand to gain trust, but can also be a bad thing if their customer interactions with social media are not the best.

Other New Features

To keep this post shorter I will just mention a few other great features.  These other features include “pinned posts” which allow brands to pin a post to the top of their timeline for one week at a time.  Easier Ad integration, advanced admin verification options, milestone creation, private message to brands, and a view and apps section which allows for easier navigation throughout the brands history.
